Why Make Your Own Sanitizer?

The truth?  Soap and water at the sink is the best option!  That use to be just fine for us, until alcohol based sanitizer hit the market in the 90s.

Fun fact: hand sanitizers were invented by medical field workers.  They provided a quick fix as doctors rushed about during duty.

Getting rid of all germs helps us stay healthy, right?

Well, not really. Studies have shown that ultra-clean environments weaken the immune system over time.

What if you could make a quick, easy sanitizer that actually strengthened your immune system?

When you’re out and about, it’s nice to have a sanitizing option.

PLUS, this sanitizer does much more than sanitize.

  • Helps heal cuts and scrapes
  • Soothes mosquito bites and spider bites
  • Calms sunburns – the tea tree peppermint one
  • Keeps you healthy by strengthening your immune system

And to further your education on the topic, here are a few more reasons why making your own sanitizer is a good option!

Reason #1

Repeated Use of Alcohol Damages Your Skin

  • Isopropyl, ethanol, and n-propanol are some of the alcohols used in hand sanitizers.
  • They irritate the skin since they dehydrate cells, strip away the skin’s natural oils and protective acid mantle, and increase the risk of contact dermatitis.
  • Alcohols disrupt the natural barrier function in the long run, reducing the skin’s ability to protect itself, and leading to heightened dehydration, aka super dry skin!

Reason #2

Other Ingredients in Many Alcohol Sanitizers are Threatening your Health

  • Many hand sanitizers these days contain triclosan. This antibacterial agent has been found in animal studies to disrupt hormone function. It also contributes to the rise of “superbugs”—viruses and bacteria that resist antibiotics.
  • Other ingredients like fragrances, parabans, propanol, methanol, and benzene create side effects like:
    • Endocrine disruption
    • Reproductive Toxicity
    • Immunotoxicity
    • Neurotoxicity
    • Skin irritation

Reason #3

Reason #4

You Can Harness the Power of Essential Oils

Most of know the power of essential oils.  They are now widely available and highly researched.

If you buy from a quality source, they are very concentrated.  Often times we use them at full strength, which is not necessary.  It just means we use up a very expensive product too quickly.

Did you know that many oils are meant to be diluted at the ratio of 1 drop per 4 ounces of liquid!!!  Some only 2 oz of liquid.  Go check one of your essential oils and see what it says, in tiny writing, on the side of jar.

In short, these oils are very effective even when using a small amount in a solution.  The ratio we use in our recipe is more concentrated than 1 drop/4 oz.  You’re welcome to play around with amounts.
