Have you thought about your oxytocin levels today?
Yea, me neither.
But, I’m trying!
Have you ever wondered why some hormones seem to have a bigger impact on your health than others? The answer lies in the hormone hierarchy, a concept that helps us understand how different hormones interact and influence our overall well-being.
What does that mean, you ask?

In our Hormone Reset Bootcamp, we talk about the “Hierarchy of Hormones.” And oxytocin is at the top. It’s the chief hormone we want on board doing it’s job. Often called the “love hormone,” oxytocin can positively influence other hormones and even improve metabolism. When we run around stressed all the time we may be subscribing to Rushing Woman’s Syndrome. We have to slow down and make sure we have oxytocin in our systems. Oxytocin does the following great things for our bodies.
- It calms the cortisol (the bully in the playground hormone)
- In turn that decreases insulin in the blood – yay.
- And gets your hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone) back ONLINE!
OXYTOCIN is amazing! See, now you’re thinking about your oxytocin.
Are you wondering how to get it? The answer is going to sound too easy, but anyone can do this! Here’s a short list:
- Slow down!!!
- BREATHE!
- Have a meaningful conversation with someone you care about
- Hold a baby
- Pet a dog
- Take a hot bath
- Etc.
Primary Hormones
Right under oxytocin at the top of the hormone hierarchy are the primary hormones that are essential for life. Insulin, for instance, plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and metabolism. Cortisol, often referred to as the “stress hormone,” helps manage stress responses and inflammation.
The Lower Tier: Sex Hormones
At the bottom of the hierarchy are the sex hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. While these hormones are important for sexual development, reproduction, and overall health, they are not as critical for basic survival as the primary hormones. Their balance is still essential for well-being but comes into play after addressing more fundamental hormonal needs.
Practical Implications of the Hormone Hierarchy
When dealing with hormonal issues, it’s important to consider this hierarchy. Focusing on oxytocin is step #1. Give a hug, have a conversation with your best friend. Do something to help you feel secure… everyday. Then, starting with the basics—ensuring that insulin and cortisol are well-balanced—is essential. Only after addressing these foundational aspects should one focus on balancing sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
